Getting Kenyan documents accepted abroad
21 April 2026 · 5 min read
Notarisation, authentication and legalisation are three different steps. Skipping one means the document is refused at the other end.
A Kenyan academic transcript is not automatically valid abroad. It generally requires certification by the issuing institution, notarisation, authentication by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and finally legalisation by the destination country's mission in Nairobi.
Each step depends on the previous one being executed correctly, and each mission has its own presentation rules — margin stamps, translation requirements, and fee payment channels differ substantially.
Kenya is not party to the Apostille Convention in the way many applicants assume, so an apostille alone is frequently insufficient. Confirm the destination requirement before starting.
Allow four to six weeks for a full chain, longer where sworn translation is involved.
